Surah Al-Balad (The City) — Arabic text & English translation

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ۝١

1. Nay, I swear by this city –

90:1Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ۝٢

2. And thou art an indweller of this city –

90:2Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ ۝٣

3. And the begetter and that which he begat,

90:3Full tafsirAsk the chat

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ۝٤

4. We verily have created man in an atmosphere:

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ۝٥

5. Thinketh he that none hath power over him?

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ۝٦

6. And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ۝٧

7. Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ ۝٨

8. Did We not assign unto him two eyes

90:8Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ۝٩

9. And a tongue and two lips,

90:9Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ ۝١٠

10. And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ۝١١

11. But he hath not attempted the Ascent –

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ ۝١٢

12. Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! –

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ۝١٣

13. (It is) to free a slave,

أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ ۝١٤

14. And to feed in the day of hunger.

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ۝١٥

15. An orphan near of kin,

90:15Full tafsirAsk the chat

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ۝١٦

16. Or some poor wretch in misery,

90:16Full tafsirAsk the chat

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ ۝١٧

17. And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ۝١٨

18. Their place will be on the right hand.

90:18Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ۝١٩

19. But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand.

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ ۝٢٠

20. Fire will be an awning over them.
