Surah Al-Fajr (The Dawn) — Arabic text & English translation

وَٱلْفَجْرِ ۝١

1. By the Dawn

89:1Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ ۝٢

2. And ten nights,

89:2Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ ۝٣

3. And the Even and the Odd,

89:3Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ ۝٤

4. And the night when it departeth,

89:4Full tafsirAsk the chat

هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ ۝٥

5. There surely is an oath for thinking man.

89:5Full tafsirAsk the chat

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ ۝٦

6. Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A’ad,

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ ۝٧

7. With many-columned Iram,

89:7Full tafsirAsk the chat

ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ ۝٨

8. The like of which was not created in the lands;

89:8Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ ۝٩

9. And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley;

وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ ۝١٠

10. And with Pharaoh, firm of might,

89:10Full tafsirAsk the chat

ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ ۝١١

11. Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands,

89:11Full tafsirAsk the chat

فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ ۝١٢

12. And multiplied iniquity therein?

89:12Full tafsirAsk the chat

فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ ۝١٣

13. Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment.

89:13Full tafsirAsk the chat

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ ۝١٤

14. Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful.

89:14Full tafsirAsk the chat

فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ ۝١٥

15. As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me.

وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَٰنَنِ ۝١٦

16. But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me.

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ ۝١٧

17. Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan

89:17Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَلَا تَحَٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ ۝١٨

18. And urge not on the feeding of the poor.

89:18Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا ۝١٩

19. And ye devour heritages with devouring greed.

وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا ۝٢٠

20. And love wealth with abounding love.

كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا ۝٢١

21. Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding,

وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا ۝٢٢

22. And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank,

89:22Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ ۝٢٣

23. And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)?

89:23Full tafsirAsk the chat

يَقُولُ يَٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى ۝٢٤

24. He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life!

89:24Full tafsirAsk the chat

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ۝٢٥

25. None punisheth as He will punish on that day!

89:25Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ۝٢٦

26. None bindeth as He then will bind.

89:26Full tafsirAsk the chat

يَٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ۝٢٧

27. But ah! thou soul at peace!

89:27Full tafsirAsk the chat

ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً ۝٢٨

28. Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure!

89:28Full tafsirAsk the chat

فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَٰدِى ۝٢٩

29. Enter thou among My bondmen!

89:29Full tafsirAsk the chat

وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى ۝٣٠

30. Enter thou My Garden!

89:30Full tafsirAsk the chat
